The League of Women Voters: An exemple for Gabon to follow
The league of women voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. They don’t support or oppose any political party or candidate.
In Gabon, women have surely become more active in politics, with the likes of Mrs. Christine Ossouka Raponda who is mayor of Libreville, Mrs Ida Reteno Assonouet who is Education Minister and scores of other women occupying high profile jobs, however those numbers still pale in comparison to their male counterparts.
Also, women participation in voting during elections is relatively low for numerous reasons. Female registered voters accoubt for less than 30% of the total registered voters in Gabon, even though the overall population is composed of 54% of women. In Gabon each of the parties have women leagues that hold activities according to their inside policies, but there isn’t a non partisan political organisation that educates women about the whole voting process.
The League of Women Voters in Kentucky regularly organizes workshops to educate and empower women, makes it easy for them to go to the polls, attend meetings, etc. They regularly organize roundtables to discuss local and national policies, to ensure that women are informed and feel involved.
The Gabonese political landscape, and women as a whole would greatly benefit from having this kind of organization setup in the country.
